#travelwithmelina portugal/lisbon/algarve

Hi guys!

ENG: Hi guys! I'm back from my vacation. I spent a wonderful week in Portugal and saw a lot. Today I wanna share my experience with you :) I will give you some tips for Lisbon and the south of Portugal. Filip and I fulfilled our dream by going to the Algarve. We have seen unbelievable beautiful beaches and I want to share them with you.

But let's start with my Lisbon tips first:

LX FACTORY

ENG: What do you get when you introduce an old strip of factory buildings to restaurants, cafés, and creative minds? You get one of the coolest hangout spots in the city. There are too many restaurants at the LX Factory to name them all, but a few stand out from the crowd.

LXeeseCake

ENG: As the biggest cheesecake lover ever, of course I had to visit the LXeeseCake. It is a little further down the street and shares a space with a glasses shop. With the intention, to eat just a yummy cake, I went to the store and splurged on a new pair of sunglasses. But the cheesecake was pretty nice too - still I have to say it can't beat the one from my mom - she bakes the best in the world - sorry guys ;)

ENG: Café na Fábrica is a cute little café. It serves a variety of pastries, breakfast, sandwiches, juices and coffee (0,70 cent for an espresso and under 2 EUR for a big soja latte – coffee is so cheap in Portugal!!!). The terrace along the side of the small building allows to eat outside beneath a few trees and the Ponte 25 de Abril.

Burger Factory

ENG: At the LX factory you will find one stylish place after the other - one of them was the burger factory. The interior was insane - but let the pictures do the talking.

Dogs

ENG: A stylish hot dog store, with lot's of neon and nice details.

ENG: I liked the area around LX factory. Especially this house caught my attention, I was fascinated of all the beautiful tiles, which decorate Lisbon's pretty houses.

Rua Nova do Carvalho: Lisbon’s Red Light District Turned Pink

ENG: Of course I had to visit the pink street in Rua Nova do Carvalho. Once known as Lisbon’s “Red Light District” and as a meeting point for sailors, local criminals, and prostitutes, it developed an unsavory reputation. The scandalous buildings have turned into works of art and now serve as fascinating points for conversation.

Bairro Alto

ENG: Bairro Alto is also known as the bohemian district, full of restaurants and luxury shops located on Rua do Norte. The view point Miradouro de Santa Catarina is located just behind Camões Square. There you'll find nice restaurants with a view over the River Tagus. This area is full of pastel painted houses, stylish shops and bars.

Elevador da Bica in Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo

ENG: Riding with the Elevador da Bica is definitely a must in Lisbon. The neighborhood goes down the hill and is a famous spot for taking pictures.

Nannarella

ENG: For the best ice cream in Lisbon you need to visit Nannarella. A must try are Caramello (salted caramel), Oreo and Basil - heavenly delicious!

Forno d'Oro

ENG: The best pizza of my life I had at Forno d'Oro. This pizzeria has actually been awarded a Michelin star for pizzerias. A highlight is definitely the golden oven, as the name says already. This oven gets so hot, that the pizzas are backed in just 70 seconds. If you crave good Italian food and nice craft beer, head to Forno d’Oro and have wood-fired pizza with equally authentic Portuguese or Italian toppings. You won’t regret it!

MANTEIGARIA - Must eat in Lisbon - Pasteis de Nata

ENG: A must-eat in Lisbon is definitely Pasteis de Nata, a puff-pastry filled with pudding. We ate them at the Manteigaria, but you will find them at every corner.

boa-bao restaurant (ASIAN FOOD)

ENG: If you like dim-sum, coconut curry and mochis, you should visit Boa-Bao. All the restaurant recommendations I give you in this post are not expensive ones. Boa-Bao is the only one which has been a bit pricey. But the food was so good and they had couple of vegan dishes, like a nice sweet potato noodle salad, wok or eggplants, which have been delicious.

Portas do Sol

ENG: A trip to Lisbon isn’t complete without taking an incredible view from one of the city’s many scenic lookouts. In fact, Lisbon is known as a city on seven hills and each hill has its own unique garden or terrace offering spectacular views over various parts of the city. From its perched location over Alfama, Portas do Sol is an idyllic spot to sit and watch the river while enjoying a glass of wine from the onsite café or kiosk. Surrounded on one side by charming souvenir shops and traditional restaurants, with winding staircase paths climbing up the hill on either side, Portas do Sol is like a sanctuary in the middle of sightseeing chaos.

Restaurante Ponto Final

ENG: A hotspot in Lisbon is definitely the restaurante Ponto Final. A place you should visit for dinner, to have the chance to watch the sunset while eating. However, our time schedule allowed us just a quick lunch and the weather was pretty unpleasant too. It was chilly, windy and super cloudy. I just managed to take one shot with blue sky, when the sun was showing for a couple of minutes. We ordered typical Portuguese food: fried beans with tomato rice. Usually it's made with fried fish, but we ordered the veggie version.

Nalu Bowls

ENG: As the biggest bowl fans and pro's, we wanted to try Nalu Bowls for a while now, they are cult in Bali. How nice, that since last year a shop opened in Portugal at Ericeira Beach - well known as surfer beach in Portugal. The bowls have been super yummy and we've been more than happy, that we finally got the chance to try them.

Ericeira Beach

ENG: Ericeira is well known as surf city in Portugal. The beach right next to Nalu bowls was stunning with a wild sea and high waves.

Sintra

ENG: After our brekkie we drove to Sintra. A must-see, when visiting Lisbon. Sintra is a small city, just 25km away from Lisbon. The place is known for their old palaces and beautiful gardens. Due to our tight schedule and because Sintra is so big, we didn't manage to see all of it. A good reason to come back soon. :)

ENG: Not far away from Sintra you will find Cabo da Roca, a beautiful view point at the coast. The atmosphere of the place reminded us a bit of Scotland - it was magical.

OFF TO THE SOUTH

ENG: After a couple of days in Lisbon we were heading south to Alentejo, visiting friends at the countryside. We stayed in a beautiful farmhouse, you can book it on Airbnb here. The untouched nature and landscape was so dreamy that we finally got the chance to relax and calm down. The owners of the house, Teresa and Augusto, who live in their own house next to the one you can rent, are such hospitable nice humans. Besides two friendly cute dogs and cats, they have their own chickens in the garden. Usually I try to eat eggs rarely, but when they are from happy chickens, you can make an exception. The eggs have been amazing for breakfast, which we celebrated at the terrace every morning with a stunning view. Furthermore, they have a lemon-, orange-, pear- and plumtree and lots of fresh veggies grow in the garden. I can highly recommend this place for your next vacation. For us it was a haven of peace and in this area you will find so many amazing and empty beaches.

ENG: The small city is super close to the house we stayed and so cute. I fell in love with the colorful houses. There you will find a supermarket, small restaurants and a beach.

ENG: Filip and I fulfilled our dream by going to the Algarve for a day. From our house it was just two hours by car to the dreamy beach Praia da Marinha. And it was so worth it, this was the most beautiful beach we have ever seen. You can hike for hours along the coast and enjoy the breathtaking view, or lie on the beach, in-between surreal green rocks.

Sagres - The End of the World

ENG: On our way to the Algarve we stopped at this stunning view point. You pay about 3€ per person entry, but it was so worth it.

Praia do Tonel - Sagres - Algarve

ENG: The combination of orange rocks (which reminded me at the Grand Canyon) and deeply blue sea was breathtaking. If you are around, a must-see and right at the beach there is a bar which offers fresh juices and more.

Albufeira - Algarve

ENG: On our way back we stopped at Albufeira for dinner. This town looks super cute, but it's also crowded and touristy. We have been more than happy to leave it after dinner and go back to nature ;) Nevertheless we had a nice dinner at Restaurante Bailote, which has been even gluten-free and vegan.

Zambujeira do Mar

ENG: This beach was not far away from our house. We must have spent hours there, watching the amazing view from above on the sea and cliffs. One advantage when you travel to Portugal in May, or early June, is that everything blooms. The landscape is truly amazing with long never ending green meadows and cute little flowers on top. I couldn't get enough of this view. Especially in combination with the cliffs, there was an atmosphere, which was hard to capture in pictures. Still, I tried my best to share with you the beauty I've seen.

Porto Covo

ENG: On our way to the south we stopped in Porto Covo. A cute little town with blue white houses and trees, which have been decorated nicely. We had a snack at Cervejaria Marques and paid for two beers, two coffee, pastries, water and ice cream under 10€ - so cheap.

ENG: Not far away from Porto Covo you will find Praia da Samoqueira in Sines. Again, a beautiful big empy beach, surrounded by amazing wild nature.

ENG: I hope you enjoyed my travel guide. I have created on Instagram a highlight for Portugal, where you can see videos of the places and the house I stayed in. And as you may know, you can follow all my travel pictures under the hashtag #travelwithmelina. Although we just had a week, I saw so much and I'm more than grateful for the opportunity to visit this beautiful country. For sure it was not my last stay in Portugal, I'm already dreaming about my next trip.
